What is Webb Bridge Park?

The name Webb Bridge Park stems from the Montgomery-Webb State Road that was once near the location of the present-day park. The Montgomery-Webb Road connected the city of Atlanta with the state of Alabama. It was built in 1837, but by 1900, it had been removed. The current Webb Bridge Park was built on the site of this old bridge. The bridge itself is known as the “Jacob Webb Bridge,” after the Confederate general Jacob Webb. The bridge was completed in 1933 at a cost of $4.4 million. It’s 770 feet long and 25 feet wide, and it’s made of reinforced concrete. The city wanted a bridge that could cross the Chattahoochee River but wasn’t as large as the old bridge. They also wanted a bridge that would be aesthetically pleasing, would be accessible to both cars and pedestrians, and would be easy to maintain. In the 1960s, the city of Atlanta began building the bridge. They built it alongside the old Montgomery-Webb Road and even built the bridge’s pillars right next to the old pillars of the old bridge. However, in the 1970s, they rediscovered the old Montgomery-Webb Road. So the city decided to build a park above the old road instead.
